Baby’s first visit & early care
When should my child visit the dentist for the first time?
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child see a dentist by age 1 or within six months of their first tooth coming in. Early visits help prevent problems before they start — and we make sure it’s a gentle, positive experience from day one.
When should I start using fluoride toothpaste?
You can start using a rice-grain-sized smear of fluoride toothpaste once your child has teeth and can spit (usually around age 1–2). Always supervise brushing until they’re about 7–8 years old to ensure proper technique and safety.
When should I start brushing my baby’s teeth?
As soon as you see that first little tooth! Use a soft baby toothbrush and water to gently clean their teeth and gums. This helps build healthy habits from the very beginning.
Can we use fluoride-free or hydroxyapatite toothpaste instead?
Yes! Hydroxyapatite is a safe, fluoride-free alternative that some families prefer. It’s gentle and effective at strengthening enamel. We’re happy to discuss both options and help you choose what’s best for your child.
Brushing, flossing & home habits
How often should my child brush their teeth?
Twice a day — once in the morning and once before bed. Make it a fun part of their routine with music, timers, or brushing apps!
Floss picks or string floss — which is better?
Whatever your child will actually use! Floss picks are easy to handle, especially for little hands (or busy parents). Traditional string floss can give a more thorough clean when your child is ready.
When should my child start flossing?
As soon as two teeth touch! That usually happens around age 2–3. Daily flossing keeps the spaces between teeth clean and cavity-free.
Can kids use a Waterpik or water flosser?
Yes — especially if they have braces or have trouble using regular floss. Water flossers are a great add-on, but they don’t fully replace traditional flossing.
Dental visits, treatments & comfort
What happens at a regular checkup?
We check for cavities, track growth and development, gently clean your child’s teeth, and give brushing and diet tips — all in a kid-friendly, relaxed setting.
What services do you offer?
From checkups and cleanings to fillings, crowns, space maintainers, orthodontics, and even frenectomies — we’re a true dental home for kids of all ages.
Are x-rays safe for my child?
At Acorn Pediatric Dental, we use low-radiation digital x-rays that are fast, safe, and essential for tracking how teeth and bones are developing beneath the surface.
Do you offer sedation for nervous kids?
Yes. We offer gentle sedation options like nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) and IV sedation for a calm, comfortable visit when needed.
Problems we treat
Could breastfeeding or latch issues be affecting my baby's oral health?
Yes. Some babies face challenges with nursing due to tongue or lip ties. Dr. Tesoriero performs infant frenectomies to help improve feeding and support proper oral development with care and empathy.
My child fell and chipped a tooth! What happens now?
No worries — kids will be kids! The team provides quick, precise care tailored to your child’s needs, restoring their tooth with gentle and expert treatment to keep them smiling comfortably.
Do you treat thumb sucking or pacifier habits?
These issues are common and totally natural — until they start affecting how the mouth develops. Acorn takes a gentle, encouraging approach, offering personalized strategies to help your child move on from the habit while nurturing a healthy smile.
What do you do about cavities and tooth decay?
Cavities are common, but treatable. At Acorn Pediatric Dental, we use minimally invasive methods — such as fillings, crowns, SDF treatments, and sealants — to restore and protect your child’s smile.
Insurance, payments & emergencies
Do I need dental insurance to book a visit?
Nope! We welcome all families, with or without insurance, and offer in-house and third-party payment plans (like CareCredit and Care Hippo) to help make care affordable.
What if my child has a dental emergency?
Call us right away at (732) 852-9200. We offer same-day appointments for emergencies like toothaches, broken teeth, or knocked-out teeth. What to do in an emergency.
